Curious about the Salisbury family’s fancy Boston furniture now in the collections of the Museum of Worcester at Salisbury Mansion and of the Worcester Art Museum? Join us in Fletcher Auditorium at 6PM this Wednesday evening for a talk by Robert Mussey.
Mussey has retired from a 40-year career as a furniture conservator. He was founder of the furniture conservation labs at Society of Preservation of New England Antiquities, now Historic New England, and for 9 years its head conservator. He is author of numerous scholarly articles on furniture conservation and history.
With her drawing rooms about to be completed, Elizabeth Salisbury sent her niece to the Vose shop to order a set of stylish chairs, sofas, card tables, sideboard, cellarette...and perhaps more inspired by similar Vose furniture in her brother’s Boston home. Upon her death in 1851, some of the furniture went to family members, other pieces to auction.
This program is FREE and open to the public.
Today, pieces from this significant set of furnishings are in the collections of the Museum of Worcester at Salisbury Mansion and the Worcester Art Museum, as well as private collections.
