The Worcester JCC, in partnership with Temple Emanuel Sinai and the Hibernian Cultural Centre, invites you to an insightful event as part of our Author Series. Join us on Sunday, November 10, at 2 PM for a compelling discussion with award-winning historian Hasia Diner, author of Opening Doors: The Unlikely Alliance Between the Irish and the Jews in America. In conversation with Frances Tanzer, Rose Professor of Holocaust Studies and Jewish Culture, Clark University.
In her book, Diner explores the fascinating history of Jewish and Irish immigrants who joined forces to secure their place in American society at the turn of the 20th century. Through a rich tapestry of historical sources, she illustrates how these two communities became steadfast allies in classrooms, picket lines, and political arenas. Their collaboration helped them become influential players in shaping America’s future, emphasizing the importance of solidarity among immigrant groups.
Hasia Diner is a Professor Emerita of American Jewish History and former chair of the Irish Studies program at New York University. She has authored numerous books on Jewish and Irish histories in the U.S., and her extensive credentials include Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships. Diner has also served as the Director of the Goren Center for American Jewish History at NYU, making her insights particularly valuable for understanding the intertwined narratives of these two communities.
This event is FREE and open to the public, and food will be available for purchase. Following the discussion, enjoy a Traditional Irish Music Seisiun at 4 PM.
