This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts — to the region and to the gallery that has championed his career for 44 years. Somerville Manning Gallery invites visitors to revisit the landscapes and vision that have shaped Sculthorpe’s reputation, and to encounter new work that continues his dialogue with place, light, and memory.
A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Sculthorpe honed his craft in the Brandywine Valley-Chester County region, drawing on rural stone architecture, drifting light, and winter snows. As his work evolved, early watercolors turned into richly painted oils and his subject-matter shifted to and from rural landscapes to the remote rocky coasts of Maine and Canada.
His works are held in major museum collections including the Delaware Art Museum (Wilmington, DE), Brandywine Museum of Art (Chadds Ford, PA), the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, OH), the Frye Art Museum (Seattle, WA), among others. His institutional recognition underscores the artist’s part in the national narrative of American landscape painting.
For longtime admirers in the Brandywine Valley region this exhibition offers both nostalgia and renewal. For newcomers, it offers a richly contemplative experience of an artist who works with light and landscape as if painting time itself.
