Meet the Artist - A Life in Art by Sandra Dovberg

From realistic paintings to abstract compositions, sculptures, ceramics, three-dimensional wall hangings, art objects, and one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry designs, Sandra Dovberg has done it all. Her exhibit, A Life In Art, is currently on display at the Reston Art Gallery through April 27. Visitors are invited to two special “Meet the Artist” events on April 13 from 12-5pm and April 27 from 2-4pm, where art lovers can connect with Sandra, explore her work, and hear about her prolific life dedicated to the arts. Discovering her artistic talents at a young age, she began by sewing her own clothes as a teenager, which evolved into a love for three-dimensional art. Sandra earned her Bachelor of Science in Studio Art with an emphasis on jewelry design from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. At Skidmore her creative pursuits expanded to include advanced silversmithing, metal sculpture and metal textile techniques while focusing on creating handmade fine jewelry from a variety of materials. For Sandra, learning has always been a continuous journey. After Skidmore, she studied art history at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia and printmaking at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She also attended numerous workshops focused on painting, jewelry, and silversmithing throughout her career. While inspired by many artists, Sandra credits much of her development as a painter to her mentor and teacher, Karen Rosasco, with whom she studied extensively in workshops held in Albany, New York. Her work has been exhibited in several museums and galleries across the United States, especially in New York State, where she lived for 45 years. These venues include the Museum of American Crafts in New York City, New York State Museum, the Rensselaer Community Arts Center in Troy, the Mimosa Gallery in Saratoga Springs, Riverfront Gallery in Schuylerville, and the Schenectady Museum in Schenectady, New York. At the latter, she was actively involved with the Designer Crafts Council, serving in all leadership roles of that organization during her tenure in Upstate New York. Since relocating to Reston in 2015, Sandra has been a featured artist at the Reston Art Gallery and Studios. A Life In Art showcases a broad selection of her creations from 1967 to the present, offering a deeply personal and visually rich narrative of her art career. The exhibit includes pieces in various media created in college, street scenes captured in time, many studies of water including the pond in her Albany neighborhood, realistic paintings of turtles (a personal favorite), still lifes, and abstract works using a mix of techniques. Sandra’s artistic process is inspired by photographs, newspaper clippings, and various media, blending realism with abstraction. But her the most important inspiration arises from her imagination. Her work includes collage, oil, watercolor, acrylic, stamping, ink, and print making. “When I paint, I explore a wide range of subjects—from abstract compositions to people and waterscapes, which I especially love,” she shares. “There’s a combination of experiences that go into my work. I’m not doing photo realism by any stretch. My work is an ongoing exploration of composition, line, texture, and color. Some view my paintings as abstract expressionism, but much of it defies categorization. In addition to traditional materials, Sandra creatively incorporates unconventional items like buttons, paper, sequins, and metals to create stunning three-dimensional pieces. Her work has received many awards in Reston, including Best in Show at the Reston Community Center for her collage Flight of Fancy, which features whimsical components created by a technique that transforms magazine photographs into abstract color fields. A vibrant member of the local arts community, Sandra is also active in the League of Reston Artists.
