Medics and Corpsmen on the battlefields of Vietnam were focused mainly on treatment and evacuation for wounded or injured troops. They resuscitated, stopped bleeding, managed pain, and whatever else was necessary to keep troops alive until they could be evacuated. Unlike their predecessors in previous wars, Medics and Corpsmen in Vietnam fought alongside their fellow soldiers and Marines — many carried rifles, sidearms, even hand grenades along with their medical kits. When a soldier or Marine was injured on the battlefield, it was the training, composure, and medical kit of the corpsman or medic that often meant the difference between life and death.
The work of nurses in Vietnam took place in field hospitals, surgical, mobile and hospital ships and aboard helicopters and planes. The average age of a nurse in Vietnam was 23 years old. The Vietnam War also saw a significant number of physicians serving in various capacities, both military and civilian. These physicians played a crucial role in providing medical care, often facing the same dangers and challenges as soldiers.
