Children’s Theatre Brings Laughter with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical
By: LIndsay Garcia
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Get ready for a hilarious and heartfelt journey into middle school life in Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre's production of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical! This highly anticipated production, performed by talented youth actors, will run at Bryant High School, 2709 Popkins Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306, with performances on March 28, March 29, March 30, April 4, April 5, and April 6. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday matinees start at 3 p.m.
Based on the beloved book series by Jeff Kinney, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical captures the highs and lows of middle school through the eyes of Greg Heffley, a self-proclaimed “wimpy kid” navigating friendships, family, and the pitfalls of popularity. With catchy songs, energetic choreography, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, this production is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.
Local young actors have been working tirelessly to bring this story to life. Director Maeve Nash shared her excitement about the production, saying, "Our young cast has empathized with Greg’s tales of middle school triumph and woe, from popularity contests to squabbles with friends, pranks gone wrong to nightmares about European pop stars. Maybe not the last part so much, but that’s why you have to get out and let us tell you Greg’s story; you never know what moldy cheese he’ll touch next!”
These young performers have dedicated months to rehearsals, developing their acting, singing, and dancing skills. Maeve Gannon (8), making her stage debut says: "It's really fun because I get to be in a different world. I can be in one scene and then in another scene... I have a different role." When asked what being on the cast has meant to her, Maeve says: "I feel great because I get to be me in the theatre. And I get to dance on stage and get a bunch of people watching, and that's really fun."
When asked who should come see the show, Maeve Gannon and fellow actors Tatiana Walker and Anna Hunt all agree: "Everybody!"
The community is invited to support these budding performers and enjoy an evening of musical fun. Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase at https://www.mvcct.org/tickets. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid or just looking for a fun family-friendly event, this production promises an unforgettable experience for all ages.
