The Woodbridge Flute Choir Presents - Flutes in Motion
The Woodbridge Flute Choir (WFC), under the direction of Debbie Gilbert and assisted by Lisa Sheldone, invites you to an evening of extraordinary flute music at its Spring Concert, Flutes in Motion! on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 7 p.m. The performance will take place at Greenspring Village Square Chapel, 7420 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150. Admission is $10.00.
This year’s concert is a celebration of dance in music, showcasing works inspired by movement, rhythm, and energy across various styles and eras. From elegant classical dances to vibrant jazz and New Orleans-inspired pieces, this program will have audiences tapping their feet and swaying to the melodies.
Highlighting the evening are two World Premiere performances. WFC will debut three movements from Mel Orriss’ arrangement of Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, a suite originally composed as a tribute to French Baroque dance forms. The second premiere, Visions of Parnassus by Jeffrey Hart, is a dynamic and expressive new work composed especially for the ensemble.
Audiences will be treated to the rich and diverse sounds of 24 talented musicians performing on an array of flutes, including piccolo, flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute. The program also features an eclectic mix of beloved classics and contemporary compositions, all connected by the theme of dance:
Gershwin Favourites – George Gershwin, arr. Roland Kernen (jazz-infused rhythms)
Danse Bacchanale – Saint-Saëns, arr. Christopher Kuhns (beatbox flute choir, embodying a wild and energetic dance)
Clair de Lune – Claude Debussy, arr. Vienna Flautists (a dreamy, waltz-like interpretation of this classic)
Second Ave. Strut – Peter Senchuk (a lively, jazz-inspired strut)
Pontchartrain – Valerie Coleman (a tribute to New Orleans dance traditions)
In addition to this spectacular lineup, the Woodbridge Flute Choir is thrilled to announce that it has been invited to perform at the 2025 National Flute Association Convention—a prestigious honor recognizing the ensemble’s excellence and artistry in flute performance.
