Art in the Atrium: Decoupage Oyster Shells

Discover the joy of art-making in our beautiful, tree-filled, and sunlit atrium. These workshops are designed to be accessible to all ages and skill levels, providing a welcoming environment for everyone to explore their creativity, build confidence, and learn new skills. All ages 1 session Jenna Lejano Decoupage is the art of decorating objects by gluing cut-out paper designs onto their surfaces and sealing them. In the 18th and 19th centuries, sailors and shipbuilders used decoupage to adorn trunks and boxes with nautical imagery, both to pass the time and express their love for the sea. In this creative workshop for all ages, we’ll take a contemporary approach to this tradition by decoupaging oyster shell trinket dishes to hold small treasures of our own! We’ll learn how to layer and bond a variety of nautical-themed papers—such as vintage maps, sea life images, and ocean-inspired designs—to create beautiful, functional objects that highlight our coastal connections. The workshop will begin with a brief walk through the galleries, followed by an introduction to the materials and techniques we’ll be using. Along the way, we’ll share stories about oysters in our region and explore craft as a sailor’s pastime. By the end of the class, each participant will leave with a set of oyster shell trinket dishes that reflect their personal connection to the ocean. *Participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Level: All levels welcome Saturday, June 7, 2025 11:00 AM–1:00 PM Members $25; Nonmembers $30
