Asian American Festival: Japanese Tea Ceremony

Yumie Farringer has performed a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at each Asian American Festival, much to the delight and appreciation of new and recurring attendees. The meditative ritual, which is almost 500 years old, is steeped in tradition and respect, and each part of the ceremony is done with awareness and intention. “It’s about being and keeping a peaceful mind,” Farringer said. “It’s also about respect for people. That’s why there is very careful handling of the items. When you turn the cup when serving it to the guest, you are turning it very precisely to show the front side.”
