In 2024, WAKE was created to offer a refuge for queer, Asian, and BIPOC communities born in the wake of the U.S. Empire—a sanctuary of resilience and ritual in the shadows of nightlife. Premiering in Los Angeles in partnership with CAP UCLA, WAKE combined performative movement and sound in an immersive nine-round boxing match to grieve, heal, and find solace.
The creative team of WAKE—including dancer and choreographer Jay Carlon and sound artist Micaela Tobin—invites you to join them for an intimate film screening and conversation about the transformation of this work and the rebuilding of rituals following the recent loss of their dear friend and collaborator, láwû makuriye’nte.
THE DANCE FLOOR WILL HEAL YOU.
WAKE (Screening & Conversation) is made possible by NEFA/New England Foundation for the Arts and in part by Tulsa Artist Fellowship.
