We tend to forget that Patañjali’s well-known eight limbs of yoga take up just 35 of the 195
sūtras that are contained in the Yoga Sūtras. The text as a whole is a rich treasury of yoga
theory and practice. The Sūtras can inform, guide and deepen our practice today, as well
make us think more broadly about what motivates us to follow the path of yoga. In this
overview workshop we will start by looking at what is known about Patañjali and how he
organized the Yoga Sūtras. We will also take a glance at the text’s broader significance
within the history of Yoga. In the second part of the workshop we will discuss Patañjali’s
definition of yoga and explore some of his key concepts, such as the idea that only by
balancing practice (abhyāsa) with non-attachment (vairāgya) can progress be made. Finally,
we will also deepen our own practice and understanding by learning how to chant some key
sūtras. Presented by Dr. Anthony Tribe, researcher and professor on Asian studies.
