The Tucson Flute Club will present their annual Members' Recital on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church (in the Music Center). The recital will feature various combinations of sizes of flutes — duets, trios, and small ensembles — playing all genres of music. The always-popular Flute Loops and Skyline Flutes will perform, and there will also be a piccolo duet! In addition, enjoy selections by the Southern Arizona Flute Orchestra, under the baton of Jack Schmidgall, Music Director. The public is warmly invited. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
The instrumentation for the concert will include six sizes of flutes - piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute, and sub-contrabass flute - encompassing seven octaves and producing a surprising, richly textured sound.
St. Philip's is located at 4440 North Campbell Avenue (at River Road, northeast corner). There is ample parking under the solar panels on the east side or in the north parking lot. The north parking lot is the closest to the Music Center — simply head south on the walkway and the Music Center will be on your right.
Tucson Flute Club was founded in 1970 by the late Philip Swanson, then professor of flute at UA. The membership includes both amateur and professional flutists, as well as those interested in the flute, including five of the original founding members. The objectives of this 501(c)3 organization are to enable flutists to meet for ensemble playing for their own enjoyment; to broaden the knowledge of flute literature by providing performing opportunities for members and guest artists; and to increase knowledge of the flute through lectures, discussions, and related activities.
