In the last decade of his life, Johann Sebastian Bach assembled a group of eighteen large-scale chorale preludes that he had composed in earlier years, perhaps intending them for a publication that he did not live to see through the press. They are some of the most ambitious and beautiful of all Bach’s organ compositions. Written in a variety of styles—trio, partita, cantus firmus chorale, ornamented chorale—these beloved works represent the pinnacle of Bach’s sacred music for organ. Organists Jeffrey Campbell and Stephen Keyl join forces to perform the “Great Eighteen” on Tucson’s finest Baroque-style organ, built by acclaimed organ builder Paul Fritts and his team of expert craftspeople. The concert will appeal to classical music lovers, organ aficionados, and anyone interested in hearing the music of Bach on an instrument ideally suited to this repertoire.
