Info - On Saturday, March 28, the hallowed halls of La Rosa (a former convent), Tucson’s newest concert venue, will fill with the music of one of rock’s greatest singer/songwriters - Carole King. Singing the greatest hits from Tapestry: The Album (The Music of Carole King). acclaimed vocalist Katherine Byrnes will take center stage at 7:30pm. Tickets begin at $32 and are available at LaRosaTucson.org.
Presented by Khris Dodge Entertainment, the first act will feature the entire 1971 Grammy® award-winning album, start to finish, kicking off with I Feel the Earth Move and ending with (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. The second act follows with a selection of the 118 songs written by King charted on the Billboard Hot 100 (she has written more than 400 songs that have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists). Joining Byrnes will be a collection of Tucson’s finest musicians: Ryan Alfred (bass), Khris Dodge (keyboards), Rylande Dodge (drums) and Aaron Hulstrand (guitar).
How does one approach the daunting task of singing some of Carole King’s greatest hits, much less the entire album? Katherine –– an international performer who calls Tucson home–– lets the songs do the work. She says, “I set out to encompass the mood of each song while also allowing freedom for the music to breathe and evolve in a natural way. One of the best things about the music of the 60s & 70s is that tracks weren't designed purely with commercialism in mind, so this allowed artists to be more experimental and expansive with their compositions and recordings. Tapestry: The Album is of that spirit. When we first started doing the show, I was very, very focused on paying proper respect to Carole King because she’s such an amazing artist, but over time I’ve learned to let the songs propel themselves, tell a story in one way or another, and teach me how to sing them.”
“I love the ebb and flow of the album,” Byrnes continues, “how it builds and then pulls back. It feels natural. The messages of every song on this album is timeless, and every track stands alone as something great, but I think Tapestry is so iconic because the entire album is curated to have an arc that the listener can sink into.”
Tapestry was released in 1971 and went on to win four Grammys: Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year (It’s Too Late) and Song of the Year (You’ve Got a Friend). King was the first female solo artist to win the Grammy for Record of the Year and the first woman overall to win Song of the Year. The album was a fixture on the Billboard charts for 313 weeks.
Tapestry: The Album is a show that was made for La Rosa,” says venue co-owner David Slutes. “We have the phenomenal Katherine Byrnes - someone who could live and perform anywhere - who has chosen to keep her roots in Tucson. She is an integral part of the Tucson artist community, and I can’t wait to hear her voice ring throughout this space.”
