– “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” with “Miracle on 34th Street,” the musical! Adapted from the beloved classic 1947 film starring Natalie Wood and Maureen O’Hara, this heart-warming musical version was written by Meredith Wilson, well-known creator of “The Music Man.” Don’t miss the magic of the holiday season with the fully LIVE production of “Miracle on 34th Street” at Arts Express Theatre, running December 5-28. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m.
Doris Walker (Tiff Jensen), single mother and practical, hardworking executive at Macy’s, does not believe in fairy tales, fiction, and she certainly does not want anyone filling her young daughter Susan’s (Sabine Milliken/Odette Soeder) head with romantic ideas of any sort.
On the day of the famous “Macy’s Parade,” a last-minute emergency leaves Doris in a lurch to find a “Santa” for the finale, but Doris happens upon Kris Kringle (Brian Doig), who seems perfect for the part. She employs him on the spot, despite questioning his perceived eccentricities, such as having reindeer names listed as “next of kin.” He’s so convincing, Doris keeps him on to “play” Santa throughout the holidays.
When Doris meets her new neighbor, lawyer Fred Gaily (William T. Olsen), sparks fly, but Doris closed her heart long ago. Hoping to woo Doris by charming her daughter Susan, Fred takes Susan to meet Santa at Doris’ work, but she is not impressed. As the kindly old Kris becomes more popular with the children, others start to question his soundness of mind. Just as Doris is beginning to know Kris, he is put on trial for his sanity, and Fred steps up to defend him. With Kris’ future and the spirit of Christmas hanging in the balance, Doris must search her heart and decide whether to believe there’s enough love—and magic—to save the day.
With a joyful, inspiring score filled with favorites like “It’s Beginning to Look at Lot Like Christmas,” “Pine Cones and Holly Berries,” and “My State, My Kansas,” “Miracle on 34th Street” is brimming with holiday cheer for the entire family.
“Miracle on 34th Street” is Directed by Michael Stewart, with Music Direction by Anne Grimes and Choreography by Kenzie Jean.
