Archaeology Cafe: Road Signs and Walking Shoes: Sandals and Imagery as Part of the Chaco Road System

Join us on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) for “Road Signs and Walking Shoes: Sandals and Sandal Imagery as Part and Parcel of the Chaco Road System,” presented by Benjamin A. Bellorado, Assistant Curator of Archaeology at the Arizona State Museum. Attend in person at Archaeology Southwest Headquarters, 300 N Ash Alley in downtown Tucson, or join us online via Zoom Webinar. For more than a century, archaeologists have studied the extensive network of Chacoan roads, proposing that they served purposes ranging from resource transport and trade to pilgrimage and ceremonial movement. Yet their true function remains open to interpretation. Bellorado explores how these roads may also have been stages for performance and identity. Drawing on evidence from rock art, textiles, and worn twined sandals, he argues that travel along the Chaco roads was both a physical act and a symbolic expression—linking movement, community, and belief in a landscape rich with meaning. Archaeology Café is a free public lecture series by Archaeology Southwest that brings experts and lifelong learners together in an informal setting. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for light refreshments. The talk begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by Q&A. If you can’t attend in person, register for the Zoom Webinar to watch live from anywhere.
