Community Workshop Cooking Classes - Beans

The Tucson Arizona Queer Girls' Pantry for Kids (QGP4K) are offering a series of 4 in-our-home cooking workshops. Alex and Leah are neighbors helping other neighbors supported by many, many neighbors to provide staples for families with kids. We also provide school friendly meals and snacks for the kids. "Although legumes are inexpensive, healthy, and a sustainable source of protein, per capita legume intake remains low in the US and below US dietary guidelines.(*)" This fact, along with our talks with families that hesitate to take lentils or chickpeas, lead us to think that sharing our skills as home cooks on how we prepare these beans might help others. Each workshop would be a stand-alone session and last approximately 2 hrs each. Leah has a Plant-based nutrition certificate and has presented workshops to families and educators for 25 years. These workshops are geared towards: bean basics (1), white beans (2), garbanzo beans (3) , and lentils (4). Each workshop will cover methods of cooking from dry, proper seasoning techniques, canned beans, frozen beans, beans as main entrees and as sides. The first session will be a demo, tasting and interactive discussion on legumes. For sessions 2-4, each person working with a partner will have prepared two dishes during the time to take home and will have sampled the third recipe. The ratio will be two people to one cooking station. All recipes will be provided. The dates will be on Saturdays in 2026, January 24, January 31st, February 7th and February 14th. Start time will be at 10 am. and held outside on our porch under a canopy with all appropriate ingredients and cooking supplies provided. The workshops will be hands-on experience, except for the first workshop, and so we anticipate that individuals may have varying levels of skills and knowledge. The first workshop is more educational and a bean tasting event. In case of rain, we will reschedule. Workshop size would be capped at 20. We will retain a wait list as well for class cancellations. We are holding these classes on our outdoor patio, so we suggest you dress in layers, long sleeves, long pants, closed toed shoes, and an apron are recommended.
