The documentary features interviews with an all-star lineup of filmmakers and film lovers including Kevin Smith, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, Joe Dante, John Landis, Lloyd Kaufman, Stuart Gordon, Joe Carnahan, Clu Gulager, Patton Oswalt, Seth Green, Mark Romanek, Richard Kelly, Tom Holland and many more. It was shot on both digital and 35mm film, and the 35mm print of the film is in the Academy Film Archives. A heartfelt love letter to repertory cinema and the theatrical experience, Out of Print celebrates the magic of watching movies on film, in independent cinemas, with an audience. The documentary spotlights Los Angeles’ iconic New Beverly Cinema and London’s legendary Prince Charles Cinema as stand-ins for the thousands of fiercely beloved movie houses around the world that continue to keep cinema culture alive. The documentary has taken on renewed relevance amid ongoing conversations surrounding physical media preservation, repertory programming, and the future of communal theatrical exhibition. The revival run is already booking repertory theaters internationally, proving that independent cinemas — and the communities built around them — are still very much alive.
