While a young boy (Fred Savage) stays home sick in bed, his grandfather (Peter Falk) reads him the story of a farmboy, Westley (Cary Elwes) who has to overcome the machinations of the evil prince Humperdinck, thwart his treacherous mercenaries, outwit and outfight dangerous beasts, conduct one of the greatest swordfights in cinema history, make a few friends, and even overcome death itself (arguably twice) to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), the princess bride and his one true love. But will Grandpa be allowed to finish telling the story with all the kissy parts?
There is a simple secret to making an all-time great fantasy story for kids. Kids don’t only identify with kid characters — they imagine themselves as grown-ups. The old fairy tales knew it. Star Wars knew it. The Princess Bride not only knows that secret, in a lot of ways it’s a movie about that secret — and about not losing your childlike sense of adventure as you grow up (and learn to like kissing, too).
The Summer Classics Movie Series is presented by Bank of America, series sponsor since 2015. Promotional support for the series is provided by WEDU PBS.
