Black Love Classics Series - "Hidden Figures"
In 2022, Tampa Theatre’s Black Love classic movie series was created in collaboration with the City of Tampa’s Community Engagement & Partnerships Department to celebrate the intersection of Valentine’s Day and Black History Month with big-screen stories of romance as told by Black filmmakers and diverse casts.
Now, the series is loving a new genre: Blerds. Shorthand for “black nerds,” blerd culture celebrates those heroes – both “super” and everyday – who stir the imagination and spark creativity.
On February 23, Tampa Theatre will screen, "Hidden Figures." Based on a true story, Hidden Figures is the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson: three Black women whose mathematic expertise at NASA played a crucial role in the success of early space missions. Despite facing racial and gender discrimination, their brilliance and determination helped break barriers and pave the way for future generations.
Guests are encouraged to stay after the film for a panel discussion featuring local Black women who are making waves in STEM-based careers.
