Big Picture: Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959)

FILM SYNOPSIS: 1h 30m / Not Rated / French, Drama, Romance Second in this month’s Big Picture series we present Hiroshima Mon Amour, also from 1959, directed by Alain Resnais. Resnais was one of the so-called Left Bank directors, not directly associated with Cahiers but motivated by the same dogmatic disagreements and basically aligned artistically. Hiroshima is the challenging, surrealist story of an unnamed couple — a French actress making an anti-war film and a married Japanese architect with whom she has an affair — who, through about a day of conversation, find themselves trying to open up to each other about their own shocking experiences with wartime violence and how those experiences are tied up with their ability to love. Complex and much more bitter than bittersweet, Hiroshima plays with memory and time while never really offering the relief of healing or atonement. In French with English subtitles.
