Michael's book The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South won two James Beard Awards in 2018 for Food Writing and Best Book, making him the first African American so awarded. His essay "I Had Never Eaten in Ghana Before. But My Ancestors Had" was included in The Best American Food Writing 2019 anthology.
When he joins us on April 29, Michael will discuss the connection between food, history and culture; how we can remake food systems and reach back to our distant past through the ways we eat today; and how local residents can find agency, spark joy, and reclaim power through food. Doors open at 5 PM for dinner. Programming runs from 6-7:30 PM, and we'll offer a book-signing in partnership with Tombolo Books from 7:30 - 8 PM.
