In the spirit of our country’s upcoming 250th birthday year, the Livingston Symphony Orchestra invites you to experience the exuberance of “The American Symphony” on December 13, 2025, 7:30 pm at Heritage Middle School, 20 Foxcroft Road, Livingston NJ.
This live program features Howard Hanson’s warmly dramatic Symphony No. 2 “Romantic” and Amy Beach’s richly orchestrated Symphony in E minor “Gaelic”, two masterpieces rarely performed in concert. These American composers, Hanson born in Nebraska of Scandinavian roots, and New England’s Amy Beach, the daughter of Irish immigrants, celebrate our country’s rich character and cultural depth through their works. Movie fans may recognize the excerpt from Hanson’s symphony that underscored the last three minutes of the film “Alien” or in a later movement, as John Williams’ inspiration for the music accompanying the bicycle scene in “E.T.”. In contrast to European composer Dvorak’s well known “New World Symphony,” influenced in part by the distinctive music of Native
and Black Americans, Amy Beach’s Symphony reflects the determination, joy, and folk melodies inherited by America through its Scottish and Irish ancestry.
You are invited to join Maestro Anthony LaGruth and the dedicated musicians of the nonprofit Livingston Symphony Orchestra to enjoy some of the most exciting music written by American composers, on Saturday December 13 at 7:30PM at Heritage Middle School in Livingston. Tickets are available online at www.lsonj.org. or at the door. More information is also available on Facebook: Livingston Symphony Orchestra-NJ, Instagram: @njlivingstonsymphonyorchestra or by calling (973)980-1809.
