Explaining New Jersey’s Many, Many Municipalities
New Jersey has 564 municipalities. In contrast, California has 483. Why does New Jersey have so many independent towns and subsequently so many municipal governments? Join historian and archivist Mickey DiCamillo as he explains why New Jersey has divided itself, divided itself again, and almost always refuses to erase its municipal boundaries. Does this subdivision of the state make New Jersey better or worse off? We will discover that the debate is quintessentially American and as old as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.
