While many were introduced to the specific artistic sensibilities of Miranda July with last year’s blockbuster release of her National Book Award-nominated and bestselling second novel, All Fours, she’s been doing notable work across many different mediums for decades now: Storied performance artist, recorder of two spoken word(-ish) albums for the label Kill Rock Stars, director of short films, writer of short stories, and plenty more. In any case, a new rung on the ladder was reached with the release of her 2005 debut feature film, Me & You & Everyone We Know, which she wrote, directed, and stars in. M&Y&EWK was developed at the Sundance Labs, premiered at Sundance in 2005, and went on to win the Camera d’Or (best first film) at Cannes that same year. As just one of a large cast (what else would you expect of a film with this title?), July plays Christine, a struggling video artist who drives an “Eldercab” on the side.
