Screening in 35mm! With writer/director/editor/actor Andrew Bujalski in person!
Marnie (Kate Dollenmayer, later an animator on Richard Linklater’s Waking Life) is 23 and "wandering the earth,” perhaps in search of romance, or employment - or perhaps just avoiding both. Mostly she's just trying to keep her sense of humor as a constellation of friends and would-be lovers engage in their own post-collegiate flailing around her. Rarely have the loose, shaggy rambles of young adulthood felt so alive and uncanny onscreen. Shot on 16mm, premiering in 2002, and going into a wider release in 2005, Funny Ha Ha is a simple film, straightforwardly composed, but its peculiar rhythms and unexpected cross-currents will always reward repeat viewings.
