We invite you to a captivating retrospective honoring the life and art of Robert Allen Nelson, a distinguished surrealist artist. This special exhibition will showcase his remarkable body of work from Saturday, December 7th, through January 15th, with an opening reception on December 7th from 3-6 PM.
Nelson was not only an internationally exhibited artist but also a significant figure in the art community, having participated in the inaugural exhibit by The American Federation of the Arts, "50 Artists: 50 States," and received prestigious accolades, including the Purchase Prize in the 31st National Exhibition of Boston Printmakers and the Cezanne Medal from the French government in 1961.
Explore the rich tapestry of influences that shaped Nelson’s surrealist creations—from past presidents and historical figures to the fantastical worlds of The Wizard of Oz and Flash Gordon. His art draws inspiration from classic fables, mythology, and the animals that surrounded him on his homestead in the mountains of Oregon, where he lived with his wife Louise, their dogs, horses, donkeys, barn cats, and parakeets. As a former professor at Millersville University, Nelson once said, “I hope people find it interesting. I like to amaze them a little bit—the dark humor disturbs them in many cases. You have to look at it and you have to think about it.”
Join us in celebrating the legacy of Robert Allen Nelson, a renaissance man whose life was a testament to the power of art. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the extraordinary world he created. We look forward to welcoming you to this memorable event!
