Swedish Christmas Program - St. Lucia Fest

The Christmas program is set in a Swedish cottage with costumed children, Swedish elves, and gingerbread men singing and dancing around the Christmas tree. The Nordic Dancers will perform Scandinavian folk dances. A favorite part of the performance for children is the appearance of Jul Tomte (Santa Claus). The program highlight is the candlelight process of Lucia, dressed in a white gown and wearing a crown of lighted candles. This Swedish tradition celebrating St. Lucia Day has been passed down for generations. On December 13th, one of the shortest days of the year, girls in Sweden dress up as Sankta Lucia, wearing a white gown and a crown of candles, to bring light and hope into the long nights of winter. Her arrival marks the beginning of the holiday season. The Swedish Council of St. Louis has been celebrating its Swedish Christmas program with the St. Louis community for 49 years. The program is from 3-5 pm in the Robert Reim Theatre at the Kirkwood Community Center. The Butik (gift shop) and Swedish Kaffestuga (coffeehouse) opens at 2 pm. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children 6-12; free for children 5 and under. Tickets available at the door and can be purchased ahead of time on the Council’s website. www.swedishcouncilstlouis.org
