NJT’s production of this classic tale will lean into the classic mystery story at the center of the action. Though Ludwig is known for being a master of comedy, this script allows us to also tell a tale of action and suspense!
Ludwig’s script provides an incredible playground for NJT’s five talented actors to show off their skills. While the actors’ playing Sherlock and Dr. Watson only portray those characters throughout the show, it falls to the 3 other performers to take on all the other roles in Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic story – over 40 distinct characters. And those characters come from a variety of different parts of the world, so in addition to the standard British dialect of the central figures, the actors must also portray people with Cockney, Devonshire, Castilian, and Swedish accents, and even more!
The play is a challenge for our NJT design team as well, as it moves swiftly from the classic 221B Baker Street home of Sherlock to the elegant Baskerville Hall, or the windswept Moors, to the gritty London streets, and beyond in its 29 quick scenes. NJT’s talented design team has leaned into the theatricality of inherent in the script to portray these different locations in exciting and unexpected ways.
This is Nisi’s first time to direct at NJT, having previously provided the voice of the Giant for NJT’s 2023 production of Into the Woods. Nisi is also an Associate Professor of Acting at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
