About the 50th anniversary of the founding of Springfield Armory NHS: In 1974, after four years of congressional debate, the bill establishing Springfield Armory National Historic Site was signed into law by President Gerald Ford on October 26. Over the next three years, the National Park Service and the City of Springfield negotiated the ownership of the lands, buildings, and use of the site. In May 1978, park rangers at the new Springfield Armory National Historic Site welcomed their first visitors.
