Uncover the legacy of an icon who has inspired generations of queer women and feminists. Amazon Rising explores the cultural, political, and personal impact of Wonder Woman, from her 1941 comic book debut to her enduring role as a symbol of strength, sisterhood, and sapphic possibility.
Drawing from Stonewall’s archives (with items from the Harriet Leyden Collection), this exhibition traces Wonder Woman’s roots in the feminist utopia of Themyscira, a society of powerful women living beyond the gaze of men. Amazon Rising reveals how this fictional Amazon became a real-world muse for lesbian identity and resistance.
