The Seattle Choral Company (SCC), led by their founding director, Freddie Coleman, begins their 44th season with “Winter Holiday: Christmas in Latvia” — a holiday concert of music for choir and orchestra featuring works by four distinguished Latvian composers.
A Latvian Christmas is unlike any other—a luminous blend of Christian traditions and ancient pagan customs. The holiday honors the birth of Christ with church services, carols, and festive meals, while also keeping alive centuries-old solstice rituals: lively mummers’ parades, fortune-telling, and the burning of logs to drive out darkness and welcome the returning sun. The result is a season steeped in magic, warmth, and deep cultural heritage.
This program invites you on a musical journey through Latvia’s Christmas spirit, featuring four works that weave together sacred devotion and folk tradition.
And, as always, the concert will conclude with a glowing candlelight finale—a tradition that fills the hall with peace, beauty, and holiday wonder.
