Guardians of Life: Indigenous Knowledge, Indigenous Science, and Restoring the Planet

Guardians of Life is an expansive project photographed over many years across the globe that highlights the essential and often underrecognized role Indigenous peoples play in leading and protecting biodiversity and cultural resilience. As climate and biodiversity crises intensify, this work calls attention to solutions rooted in Indigenous knowledge. Guardians of Life seeks to recognize and promote a broader movement supporting Indigenous leadership, sovereignty, and a thriving future for all. Kiliii Yüyan will share behind the scenes stories from years spent documenting Indigenous communities effectively protecting their lands and waters. Through photography and firsthand storytelling, Guardians of Life illuminates the courage, knowledge, challenges, and stewardship that sustain life on Earth. Kiliii Yüyan is a photographer of Chinese and Nanai/Hézhè (East Asian Indigenous) ancestry whose work explores the relationship between people and the natural world. Based in Seattle on traditional Duwamish and Coast Salish lands, Kiliii is known for immersive storytelling that bridges cultures and challenges conventional narratives about conservation. Many of you may remember his compelling National Geographic Live! event at Benaroya Hall in January 2024. Guardians of Life builds on that work and marks a major milestone and commitment to expanding this vision. With appreciation to Town Hall, 4Culture, and Elliott Bay Book Company for supporting this Braided River event. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the event.
