The Lost Object

A Christian Boy Leaves Texas and Becomes an Orthodox Jewish Woman in New York Abbie Cohen grew up as a Christian boy in small-town Texas. She left for college in New York, and he began a remarkable journey of transition across gender, faith, and a search for community and connection. Today, she lives in New Jersey as an Orthodox Jew, the widow of an ultra-orthodox husband. Seattle’s Baker Theater Workshop is proud to premiere her remarkable autobiographical play The Lost Object at ReAct Theatre’’s Studio, located at 562 1st Avenue South. Previews are Friday, March 14th and Saturday, March 15th, followed by two performances on April 19th and 20th. “Our cast has been rehearsing this new play for months, and we’re so proud to bring it to Seattle,” Peter Temes, Baker’s founder and director of The Lost Object, shares. “This is an extraordinary work of art about a boy becoming a woman, about a journey into Orthodox Judaism, and about crafting a meaningful life against powerful currents. In rehearsal, we’ve all felt the power of Abbie’s struggles to live an authentic life – to wrestle with questions of love and faith and to stay standing when culture, family, and economic necessity push hard against survival and living a sustainable life. We’ve shed tears as we’ve stood up this work of art, and audiences will too.” Departing a privileged university life for a single-room-occupancy hotel; hearing the words of a mother who tells her trans daughter “you cannot be woman”; embracing a marriage to an Orthodox Jewish butcher – and financial fraudster, and one-time terrorist, and teller of lies across the family table – the play’s protagonist continues to seek a spiritual connection and an honest way to live as a whole person. She has moments of genuine love and ends the play with a steady strength. This is a play for all of Seattle, for trans people and everyone else, for Jews and Christians and Muslims and people of any faith and no faith at all, and especially for people seeking to live authentic, connected lives.
