“What Freedom Means to Me” with Hermitage Fellow Roger Q. Mason, Monday, January 12, 5:30pm: Hermitage Fellow Roger Q. Mason is known for their “kaleidoscopic historical fantasias” (American Theatre), juxtaposing real people and events with fantastical elements to examine modern life and cultural divides. Mason’s play and subsequent film adaptation Lavender Men received critical acclaim. As part of their Hermitage residency, Mason is working on a sequel to this celebrated work exploring what it means to live in a democracy today and diving into questions of privilege, self-love, and the cost of liberation. Join us as we discuss Roger’s work, hear excerpts from this new play, and delve deeper into the creative process of playwriting. The evening will close with a short writing exercise, inviting participants to explore and share their own relationship to freedom. Presented in partnership with Venice Theatre. Registration is required at HermitageArtistRetreat.org ($5/person registration fee). Venice Theatre, 140 Tampa Ave. West, Venice, FL 34285
