Edgewood Historic District Walking Tour

You may know about the historic downtown area, and maybe even the stately homes of Venezia Park, but do you know about the neighborhood John Nolen designed with more modest homes? Off the island of Venice and tucked away west of the 41 Bypass, Edgewood was meant to provide affordable housing for engineers and those men who built the city. John Nolen laid out the community with vast setbacks to provide a spatial feel for the roads and front lawns. Here his design standards were less stringent, so you will see a larger variety of home styles ranging from Mediterranean Revival, simple cottages, and Lamolithic concrete homes. The history of Edgewood is filled with individuals who have helped shape Venice through their work. Learn about the monkey sanctuary that was started there, the simple business owners and army veterans who settled there, and how one man is connected to Eagle Point, Edgewood, and Tarpon Center. Enjoy this 90-minute stroll in one of Venice's lesser-known historic districts. Registration closes 24 hrs. prior to tour. Email [email protected] or call 941-486-2487. Provide tour name and date, name of each participant, and your email address. Registration confirmation will be sent to you via return email. $25 exact cash payable at time of tour.
