The opera is based on the Oscar Wilde play of the same name that scandalized Victorian England. The story is contemporary with Jesus Christ's life, during the Roman conquest and occupation of the Levant. Although the grit and violence components are the most tantalizing, Salome is actually a work of great beauty and tremendous dramatic power. Salome's rejection of her stepfather's sexual advances, her infatuation with the young and handsome John the Baptist, who rejects her, and her choice to have him beheaded so that she can own his head and kiss his lips, are steps in a story that develops inexorably. Strauss' fantastical, highly romantic and atmospheric score makes every step along the way seem inevitable. Presented fully staged, with orchestra, sets, projections, period costumes and a top-notch cast at a venue that affords great immediacy and guarantees a powerful experience.
