Resonance: Sarah Davachi

Double Reeds is a longform collaborative work with music by Sarah Davachi and film, separately titled Hivernale, by Dicky Bahto. As a musical performance, Double Reeds explores a harmonic and spatial exchange between the Hammond B3 electromechanical organ and the Leslie speaker, the latter with its characteristic rotational acoustics, alongside just intoned sine tones and just intoned woodwind and brass samples. In tandem with Bahto’s film, the work navigates a constantly shifting boundary between perception and repetition. Viewers/listeners are required to actively participate in the creation of structure in order to follow the folds of visual and sonic texture into their artificially constructed depths. Following European premieres in Bologna and Berlin, this is the first time that this work will be presented live in the United States. Sarah Davachi (b. 1987, Canada) is a composer and performer whose work is concerned with the close intricacies of timbral and temporal space, utilizing extended durations and historical tuning systems to underscore gradual variations in texture, harmonic complexity, intonation, and psychoacoustic phenomena. Her compositions span solo, chamber ensemble, and acousmatic formats, incorporating a wide range of both acoustic and electronic instrumentation.
