Resonance: Circuit des Yeux featuring Alan Sparhawk

Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux presents her piece Wordless Music, a recent work for solo voice based on a simple concept—one microphone and one voice. In 2019, Fohr’s late grandmother fell to extreme side effects of late onset Parkinson’s Disease. As the illness moved through and paralyzed different parts of her grandmother’s body, Fohr was moved to take stock of the physicality of her own musicianship. Wordless Music is a direct response to this experience, inspiring Fohr to use her body to its utmost powers of resonance and projection. “Wordless Music is improvisational in spirit and a meditation on nowness,” says Fohr. “When I began performing [it] in public, my personal practice was transformed into a very powerful action in which I became nothing more than a body emitting energy into the world. I am able. I am conscious. I am here in this moment. I am body shouting into the world, nothing more and nothing less.” Haley Fohr is a musician, composer, and multidisciplinary artist whose work defies easy categorization. It has encompassed acclaimed albums, free-form improvisation, and large ensemble compositions. She created an original soundtrack for Charles Bryant’s Salomé (1923) for Opera North in 2018, which was performed at the Barbican in London and Art Institute of Chicago among other venues. Notable artist residencies and commissions include a 40-piece choral composition with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus (The Receptionist), an interactive anechoic sculpture (Big Black Box), and a piece for pipe organ (Breathing Machine). Her most recent full-length album, Halo on the Inside, was released earlier this year by Matador Records.
