Step into the world of wildness and wonder and come in costume! Whether you're channeling Dr. Frank-N-Furter or ready to do the Time Warp, dress up in character to show you are a fan of this cult classic.
50 years after its premiere, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. In many cities, live amateur shadow-casts act out the film as it is being shown and heavily draw upon a tradition of audience participation. Today, the film has a large international cult following and has been considered by many as one of the greatest musical films of all time.
Beyond its cult status, the movie is also widely said to have been an influence on countercultural and sexual liberation movements that followed on from the 1960s. It was one of the first popular musicals to depict fluid sexuality during a time of division between generations and a lack of sexual difference acceptance.
In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
COME IN COSTUME!
To dress up for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, you can either dress as a specific character like Frank-n-Furter, Janet, or Rocky, or wear a costume that reflects the show's gothic, glam-rock, or fetish aesthetic with items like corsets, fishnets, and bold makeup. You can also choose a simpler option, such as the preppy outfits of Brad and Janet or just wear something comfortable, but avoid striped tops, suits, sandals, and anoraks.
Character costumes
• Dr. Frank-n-Furter: A dark red, spiky wig, bold makeup, and a glamorous outfit, such as a lace corset and high heels.
• Janet Weiss: Start with the preppy look from the beginning of the film (a collared jacket, knee-length skirt) or, for the more liberated Janet, a bra, slip, high heels, and latex pieces.
• Rocky: Try a gold-lamé two-piece, or find a three-piece suit and accessorize with a single glove, rings, and a colorful wig.
• Magenta or Columbia: Magenta often wears a French maid outfit, while Columbia can be seen in a gold top hat, corset, and a sequined or ruffled outfit.
• Brad Majors: A simple preppy look with a cardigan or a sports jacket is all you need.
• Riff Raff: A black jacket and trousers will suffice.
• Eddie: A leather jacket with graphics, a glittery shirt, and jewelry can create an Eddie costume.
General styling tips
• Makeup and hair: Go for bold, dark makeup, including heavy eyeliner, red lipstick, and possibly bright or spiky hair, as seen in many of the looks.
• Aesthetic: Embrace the show's glam-rock and gothic elements by wearing layers of fishnets, a corset, and bright colors. Consider incorporating sequins, glitter, and other flashy accessories.
• For the shy: A less elaborate outfit like the preppy look of Brad or Janet is a great starting point if you're new to Rocky Horror.
• What to avoid: While audience participation is encouraged, there are a few things to steer clear of:
o Striped tops (this is a strict no-no for Rocky Horror).
o Suits, sandals, and anoraks, as they are seen as too "trainspotter-y".
• The main thing to remember is to have fun and let loose. Rocky Horror is all about embracing the unconventional and having a great time. Immerse yourself in the experience, sing along and even dance
It’s definitely not obligatory to dress up but so many folks embrace the spirit of the show and wear costumes inspired by the characters. You don’t have to go full on fishnets, suspenders, heels and corset, but a lot of people will! If you’re a little shy you could perhaps dip your toe in and go preppy and sensible like Brad and Janet or don a black jacket and trousers (and sport a hunchback) for Riff Raff. If you’re a little braver go as a French maid à la Magenta or hit the sequins for Columbia... Then work your way up to Frank!
