Love! Murder! Passion! Grief! Opera!

The San Francisco Bach Choir presents Love! Murder! Passion! Grief! Opera!, an afternoon of soaring arias, powerful choruses, larger-than-life characters, and some of opera’s most unforgettable stories. Travel from pioneers in the American West to the fires of Hell, from John Brown’s dream of justice to Carmen’s seductive song. Along the way, audiences will experience music filled with love and longing, drama and deceit, heartbreak and hope. Joining the San Francisco Bach Choir are four featured soloists: soprano Cara Gabrielson, alto Sara Couden, tenor Elliott James Encarnación, and bass Curtis Streetman. Together, these mesmerizing vocalists bring opera’s heroes, villains, lovers, dreamers, and larger-than-life personalities to the stage. Joining our choir members and soloists at the piano are Yongyu Gao and Dara Phung. Have a drink with Verdi. Weep for Dido. Applaud the Meistersinger. Whether you’re a longtime opera fan or simply curious, this lively program offers an accessible way to experience the drama, humor, beauty, and emotional power of opera. About the San Francisco Bach Choir: Founded in 1936, the San Francisco Bach Choir is one of the Bay Area’s longstanding choral organizations, bringing together skilled volunteer singers to perform an ambitious repertoire ranging from the music of J.S. Bach and other great choral masters to works spanning centuries, cultures, and musical traditions. The Choir is led by acclaimed Artistic Director Magen Solomon, a conductor, singer, scholar, and educator who has been active in early music and choral performance for more than four decades. Artistic Director of SFBC since 2014, Solomon is known for adventurous programming that pairs musical excellence with curiosity, creativity, and a wide-ranging exploration of the choral repertoire. She also serves as Artistic Director of the San Francisco Choral Artists and has conducted and taught with ensembles and institutions throughout the United States and abroad. Through concerts, educational programs, and community events, SFBC invites audiences to experience the depth, beauty, drama, and power of choral music together.
