“MUSIC OF MESOAMERICA” RETURNS WITH GUATEMALAN SINGER, AN EASTMAN ALUM

The recital opens with a set of eight songs for voice and piano, Ser de ilusión y muerte (Being of Illusion and Death) by Spanish composer Victor Carbajo based on poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez. The recital continues with works by Hector Armienta, a nationally recognized Mexican-American composer; Guatemalan-born composer and conductor Miguel Angel Sandoval Cabrera; Patricia Caicedo, a leading voice in Latin American and Iberian art song who brings forgotten composers and overlooked languages —Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and Indigenous—into the spotlight; and writer and composer Yvette Souviron. Linda Boianova will serve as the recital accompanist.
Barry, who describes herself as a “proud Indigenous Mayan in the performing arts,” recently earned her master’s degree at the Eastman School of Music in the studio of Katherine Ciesinski. Known for her rich, emotive voice and powerful stage presence, this year Barry makes her house debut with Sarasota Opera as an Apprentice Artist. ROS’ Arts Connexions is a bold and vibrant concert series exploring the rich intersections of classical music with diverse cultural, ethnic, and storytelling traditions. From gospel and jazz to Asian, Hispanic, Persian, African-American, and Indigenous musical voices, Arts Connexions celebrates the shared humanity of sound.
