Outside Voices at the ADK-GVC Chapter Meeting
The agenda for this free and open to the public Adirondack Mountain Club-Genesee Valley Chapter meeting is:
6:30 pm Workshop: Outdoorsy Book Talks: Back by popular demand! We will have a favorite books workshop presented by our members! It is a great way to learn about outdoor themed books and pick up some holiday gift ideas!
7:30 pm Program: A Special Challenge: Summiting the 46 Peaks of the Adirondacks on Skis by Doug and Jamie Kennard.
Doug Kennard and Jamie Kennard completed their journey to ski all of the Adirondack 46 High Peaks in New York State. They are the 2nd pair to have ever completed this challenge . They have now skied all 81 High Peaks in New York State (both the Catskill 35s and Adirondack 46ers).
Their skis are designed for backcountry skiing. Skins made with horse hair are placed on each ski for traversing uphill. The skins prevent slippage backward, similar to that of a cross country ski. When at the summit the skins are removed from each ski to be able to easily descend back down the mountain.
“It was a challenging adventure, mistakes were made, and plenty of backcountry lessons were learned along the way. It was certainly exhausting, cold and painful at times, but it was also a rewarding adventure…” They are very grateful to have completed this very challenging experience together as brothers.
