As it evolved to become an eminent American social institution, it was not only a logical place for birthing the mid-20th century African American Civil Rights Movement, but was the necessary location for incubating African American civil rights. By intertwining how social movements develop and the attributes of the Black Church as a social institution, Dr. Timothy Johnson, Emeritus Professor of Social Work at Roberts Wesleyan University, answers the question of civil rights: why the Black church? The presentation offers participants a pathway for understanding the explosive dynamism of the mid-20th century African American Civil Rights Movement.
