This program explores how composers from different backgrounds engaged with the rapidly changing world at the turn of the 20th century. Boulanger’s introspection, Ravel’s coloristic experimentation, and Rachmaninoff’s emotional depth, all reflect the cultural shifts and personal tensions that defined the era. Tanaka’s work, in a sense, looks forward to a world where sound, rhythm, and emotion are reshaped by the forces of technology and globalization. The recital concludes with Gershwin’s Embraceable You, a moment of reflection on how the past and future seamlessly coexist in the music of today.
