Goodness Shall Follow features three distinct but complementary modern dance works centering on the theme of finding and seeing goodness.
"Hit or Miss" explores the little things in life that don't quite line up: you thought something would go one way, but it ends up entirely differently. Featuring tutus, storytelling, and a magical toy box, it invites the audience to commiserate and laugh at those everyday situations that confound our finite brains.
"No Darkness Too Dark," follows a journey many of us are familiar with: life is going along normally, and then through circumstances out of our control we end up in a crisis. Inspired by a dark season in the choreographer's life, and set to the incredible Four Seasons Recomposed by Max Richter, this piece features eight dancers from the Rochester community. Audience members will be encouraged that they are not alone in their darkness, and that supported by community, there is hope of the light returning.
“The Goodness of Stepping Outside,” created with cellist Esther Rogers Baker, sprung from community members’ answers to the question, “What is goodness to you?” and the desire to step outside the boxes of “dancer” and “musician” and create something truly interdisciplinary. The result is a thought-provoking, joyful, inspiring collaboration between two people from different backgrounds & disciplines showing that it is possible to be different and together.
The performance will conclude with some light refreshments and a Q & A session with the creators & performers. ASL Interpretation will be provided. Running time: approximately 1 hour with two short pauses.
In order to make this performance accessible to all, tickets are being sold on a sliding scale. Please consider supporting the artists by giving more if you have the financial means to do so! We greatly appreciate your generosity.
About the creator: For the last decade and a half dancer & choreographer Joanna Rodriguez has been raising and homeschooling her four children while squeezing in a bit of dance here and there. Much to her delight, she recently shifted into spending more time pursuing her passion for dance & sharing it with others. She teaches, choreographs, and performs in and around Rochester. Joanna loves collaborating with other artists and using the language of dance to express & communicate the human experience.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.
