Commotion Dance Theater at Rochester Fringe

Commotion Dance Theater interweaves magic, mayhem, and mystery in new and repertory works presented at the 2024 Rochester Fringe Festival. Ruben T. Ornelas will premiere a solo, “Four Spheres,” set to music by Chicago-based musician and composer Jason Roebke. Laurie MacFarlane will present “Bella and the Witch,” a piece inspired by the folktales of Baba Yaga and Vasilisa, with props by Martha Schermerhorn and an original score by Parker Callister. Described as “a creepy, bizarre world of witches, moving trees and stolen light” (City Magazine), Bella and the Witch promises to thrill and amuse. Performers include Marissa Engel, Nanako Horikawa Mandrino, Angela Lopez, John McDairmant, Alaina Olivieri, and Nico Malijan. Commotion Dance Theater specializes in multi-disciplinary, movement-based works, offering “a light-hearted performance that required zero effort to enjoy and “a very different type of dance performance” (City Newspaper). Under the direction of long-time creative partners Laurie MacFarlane and Ruben T. Ornelas, Commotion has appeared locally at MuCCC, the Avon Opera House, Writers and Books, and Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Buffalo. This is their eighth appearance at the Rochester Fringe. Tickets to Commotion Dance Theater are available online at rochesterfringe.com; via phone at 585-957-9837 (additional fees apply); in person at the One Fringe Place box office at the corner of Main & Gibbs; or at the door at MuCCC, 142 Atlantic Avenue, Rochester, NY. This project is funded in part by a grant from the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, and with support from the Rochester Fringe Festival Production Launch Fund. All programs are subject to change.
