James Van Heusen, Salt City Swinger: Chester Babcock was just a piano player from Syracuse, New York before he changed his name to Jimmy Van Heusen. In a few short years, he became one of the most prolific and celebrated songwriters of the mid-20th century. Van Heusen chalked up 14 Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song while winning the prize four times. A composer of over 1000 popular songs, many of which became standards, he wrote extensively for the two most successful pop singers of the 20th century, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. The latter admired Van Heusen for his swinging on as well as off the bandstand! You don’t want to miss this party!
