The Many Faces of Harriet Tubman

Returns 13 times to rescue approximately 70 slaves (many being family members) - serving as a ’conductor’ on the UGRR. During the Civil War, she posed as a spy and scout for the Union Army - leading a raid into South Carolina. After the war, assists family and others to settle down in Auburn, New York, where she established a residence for homeless and aged African Americans. Connects with Susan B Anthony’s efforts in building the suffragist movement. But this is only a snapshot. There is so much more to learn about Harriet - as one dives into her life. Let’s take a ride - as we explore, uncover, unmask the many faces and facets of her storied life. Presented by Jerry Bennett. Jerry Bennett is an Underground Railroad enthusiast who grew up in Pittsford and attended an elementary school once used as a stop on the UGRR. He is very passionate about this topic, especially after learning that his ancestor worked as an abolitionist in Elmira. Co-sponsored by the Perinton Historical Society and Fairport Public Library. Registration Required.
