James A. Hard: Last Civil War Union Combat Veteran

James A. Hard was the last of more than two million Union combat veterans of the Civil War. Hard was born in Victor, New York, but lived much of his early life in Windsor, near Binghamton. He was engaged in about 15 battles between 1861-1863. Most of Hard’s later life was spent in Rochester where he was a social luminary. He rode in all the Memorial Day Parades and celebrated his centennial birthday at big parties in his honor at the Seneca Hotel. This program will visit Hard’s early life and later role in keeping Civil War history alive in Rochester. Artifacts pertaining to James A. Hard’s life will also be on display. Presented by David Crumb, Parma Hilton Historian. This event is co-sponsored by the Perinton Historical Society and Fairport Public Library. Registration is required.
